Will We Ever See a New VW Phaeton?

The VW Phaeton doesnt get the credit it deserves, probably because of the badge it wears. Its a car meant to take on the Mercedes S-Classes of the world from a brand that made its name selling “the peoples car.” The Phaeton was a heavily engineered slab of luxury straight from Wolfsburg, created under the watchful eye of Ferdinand Piech. The Phaeton was released in 2002 and hasnt caught on with the auto world. It totally flopped in America, where its no longer sold, and sold less than 4,000 units last year in the rest of the world. To put that in perspective, VW sold 6.16 million cars last year. The Phaeton did nothing to help it. VW had been developing a new version of the car, but Piechs sudden departure earlier this year has delayed that. Word is that a new Phaeton is ready, all they have to do is turn the switch, but they want to focus on finding a way to reduce the production and material costs. Its too bad that the Phaeton never caught on, because its a handsome, understated sedan that can rival any car in its class. For now, just go buy a used Phaeton and revel in how lovely it is.
